Before measuring, make sure that you have the right tools available:
  1. a good measuring tape (A folding rule is good if you are working alone)
  2. a sharp pencil and sharpener
  3. eraser
  4. good drawing paper
IMPORTANT: All measurements are in millimetres.

Drawing an Outline of the Kitchen
  1. Using squared or plain paper, outline the walls of the kitchen. Keep the drawing proportionate to the shape of the kitchen itself. If your kitchen is square, make the outline square, if it is a galley style kitchen, just draw two parallel lines, etc.
  2. Mark all windows and doors with short perpendicular lines.
Measuring for the Outline
  1. Start in one corner of the room at about 36" from the floor, regular counter-top height. Don't bother with appliances and cabinets for now, take the measurements to the first break, obstruction or opening. Stop at the edge of trim/molding if there is some.
  2. Measure from one side of the trim to the other.
  3. Measure the trim and note its width.
  4. Continue measuring to the next break. Do this until you have gone around the room and noted everything on your outline.
  5. Take a wall to wall measurement of each wall, then check your additions to make sure that the first series of measurements including the windows, doors and obstacles matches the wall to wall total.
Measuring Doors
  1. Measure the wall to the left of the door, from the corner of the wall to the left edge of the casement.
  2. Measure the width of the door itself, including the casement.
Measuring Windows
  1. Measure the wall to the left of the window, from the corner of the wall to the left edge of the casement.
  2. Measure the width and height of the window itself, including the casement.
  3. Measure the distance from the floor to the bottom edge of the casement.
Measuring Appliances
  1. You will need measurements for the Sink, Refrigerator, Range and Dishwasher.
  2. Measure the wall to the left of each appliance, from the corner of the wall to the left edge of the appliance.
  3. Measure the width of the appliance itself.
